WooCommerce Payment Gateway Not Showing at Checkout? How to Fix It

Stripe, PayPal, or another payment method missing at checkout? Check gateway setup, keys, currency and country rules, the Checkout block, caching, and logs.

Customers reach your WooCommerce checkout, but the payment method you set up is not there. Maybe Stripe, PayPal, or card payments are missing entirely, or only appear for some customers. In the worst case the checkout shows “Sorry, it seems that there are no available payment methods” and nobody can pay.

A payment method usually disappears because WooCommerce has decided it is not available for that particular order, not because the plugin is broken. This guide walks through the checks that find the reason.

Step 1: Confirm the gateway is enabled

Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments. Check that:

  • The payment method you expect is listed and switched on.
  • Its setup is complete. Many gateways show “Finish setup” or “Action needed” until you connect your account or enter API keys.
  • The payment plugin itself is active on the Plugins page and up to date.

If you recently moved the site or restored a backup, gateways that store connection details may need to be reconnected.

Step 2: Check test mode and API keys

Most gateways have a test (sandbox) mode and a live mode, each with its own keys. Common problems:

  • Live mode with empty or test keys. Some gateways hide themselves when the keys for the current mode are missing or invalid.
  • Keys from the wrong account, for example a different Stripe account, or PayPal sandbox credentials used in live mode.
  • An account that is not yet approved by the payment provider. Log in to your Stripe, PayPal, or other provider dashboard and check for warnings or pending verification.

Re-enter or reconnect the keys from the provider’s dashboard, save, and test the checkout in a private browser window.

Step 3: Check currency and country support

Many payment methods only work with certain currencies or customer countries. For example, a local bank payment method may only appear for one currency, and some buy-now-pay-later methods only appear in supported countries and above or below certain order amounts.

  • Check your store currency in WooCommerce → Settings → General.
  • Check the gateway’s documentation for supported currencies and countries.
  • If you use a currency switcher, test the checkout in each currency.
  • Test with a billing address in each main country you sell to, such as the US, UK, and Australia.

Step 4: Check order amount and product rules

Gateways and other plugins can hide payment methods based on the cart:

  • Minimum and maximum amounts: some methods only appear within a range of order totals.
  • Subscriptions: if the cart contains a subscription product, only gateways that support recurring payments are shown.
  • Shipping-based rules: Cash on delivery can be limited to certain shipping methods in its settings, and plugins that restrict payment methods by shipping zone, user role, or product category may hide others.
  • Free orders: if the order total is zero, WooCommerce does not show payment methods at all, which is expected.

Try a simple test cart with one normal product. If payment methods appear, compare it with the cart where they disappear.

Step 5: Check the checkout page type

Newer WooCommerce stores use the Checkout block, while older stores use the classic [woocommerce_checkout] shortcode. Some older payment plugins do not support the block checkout. In that case, WooCommerce usually shows a notice in the editor when you open the checkout page, and the gateway does not appear for customers.

To check, edit your checkout page under Pages. If it uses the Checkout block and your gateway is missing:

  • Update the payment plugin, since many have added block support.
  • If it still is not supported, switch back to the classic checkout. In the block editor, select the Checkout block and choose the option to switch to the classic shortcode, or replace the block with the [woocommerce_checkout] shortcode.

Step 6: Rule out caching and plugin conflicts

  • Exclude cart, checkout, and my account pages from caching in your caching plugin, server cache, and CDN. A cached checkout can show the wrong payment options or none at all.
  • Test for conflicts on a staging copy: switch to the Storefront theme and deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and the payment plugin. If the gateway appears, reactivate the others one at a time.
  • Check the browser console (F12, then Console) on the checkout page. A JavaScript error from another plugin can stop the payment area from loading.

Step 7: Read the logs

Go to WooCommerce → Status → Logs and look for logs from your payment plugin or for fatal-errors. Many gateways also have a “Debug log” option in their settings. Turn it on, reload the checkout, and check the log for messages about invalid keys, unsupported currencies, or blocked requests. Turn debug logging off again when you are done.

If the gateway appears but payments fail or orders stay pending, the problem is further along. Our guide to WooCommerce checkout problems covers webhooks and stuck orders.

When to call an expert

Get help if the gateway is missing for real customers and you are losing sales, if the logs mention API or webhook errors you do not understand, or if fixing it would mean changing your checkout page type on a busy store. Testing payments on a live store needs care to avoid real charges and confused customers.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I see the payment method but my customers do not?

You may be logged in as an administrator, testing from a different country, or seeing a different cached version of the page. Test in a private window, logged out, with a typical customer address and cart.

Why does PayPal show but card payments do not?

Card fields often depend on extra account approval, the currency, or the customer’s country. Check the gateway’s settings and your provider dashboard for card payment requirements.

Can I control which payment methods appear for which products?

Yes. WooCommerce does not do this on its own, but plugins can show or hide payment methods by product, shipping method, country, or user role. Keep the rules simple so you can see why a method is hidden.
