You click Edit with Elementor and the editor never finishes loading. You see the spinning Elementor logo, a grey screen, or an empty left panel. This is one of the most common Elementor problems, and it is almost always caused by server limits, a plugin conflict, or an outdated add-on.
Work through these checks in order. Most sites are back in the editor within the first few steps.
Step 1: Update Elementor, Elementor Pro, and add-ons
Elementor and Elementor Pro must be on compatible versions. After an update of one but not the other, the editor often fails to load. Update both, then update any third-party Elementor add-ons (Essential Addons, Ultimate Addons, JetElements, and similar). Outdated add-ons are a leading cause of editor loading errors.
Step 2: Check the System Info and raise the memory limit
Go to Elementor → System Info. Check the PHP version and the WordPress memory limit. Elementor recommends at least 256 MB. If it shows less, add this to wp-config.php above “That’s all, stop editing”:
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
If the value does not change, your host caps PHP memory and needs to raise memory_limit for you. Large pages with many widgets need more memory than small ones, which is why the editor sometimes loads for some pages and not others.
Step 3: Switch the editor loader method
Go to Elementor → Settings → Advanced (or Features in newer versions) and look for Switch Editor Loader Method. Enable it and try the editor again. This solves loading problems on some servers.
Step 4: Test for plugin conflicts
Another plugin may be breaking the editor’s JavaScript. Use the free Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin’s troubleshooting mode, which disables plugins for your session only, so visitors are not affected.
- Enable only Elementor and Elementor Pro.
- Try the editor. If it loads, re-enable your other plugins one at a time and test after each.
- The plugin that breaks the editor is the conflict. Check for an update or contact its developer.
Optimization plugins are frequent offenders. Exclude the Elementor editor from JavaScript minification, combination, and delay features.
Step 5: Rule out the theme
Switch to the free Hello Elementor theme or a default WordPress theme in troubleshooting mode. If the editor works, your theme is incompatible or has custom code that conflicts. Update the theme or check with its developer.
Step 6: Check the browser console for errors
Open the editor, press F12, and open the Console tab. Red errors show the script that failed. Common messages:
- 500 Internal Server Error on admin-ajax.php: a PHP error or memory limit on the server. Check the WordPress debug log.
- Mixed content warnings: parts of the site still load over HTTP. Fix your site URLs so everything uses HTTPS.
- Blocked by a firewall or security plugin: rules in ModSecurity, Wordfence, or Cloudflare can block Elementor’s requests. Check their logs and whitelist the editor if needed.
Step 7: Regenerate CSS and clear caches
Go to Elementor → Tools and click Regenerate Files & Data, then clear your caching plugin and CDN caches. This fixes many cases where the editor loads but the page looks broken, or where changes do not show on the live site.
Step 8: Check server limits with your host
Ask your host to confirm these PHP settings, which Elementor relies on for large pages:
memory_limit: 256M or highermax_execution_time: 300max_input_vars: 3000 or higher (low values can stop large pages from saving)post_max_sizeandupload_max_filesize: 64M or higher

Frequently asked questions
Why does Elementor load on some pages but not others?
Larger pages with many sections and widgets need more PHP memory and higher max_input_vars. Small pages fit within the limits, large ones do not.
Will reinstalling Elementor delete my designs?
No. Your page designs are stored in the database, not in the plugin folder. Deleting and reinstalling the plugin keeps your content, though you should always back up first.
Elementor loads but my changes do not appear on the live site. Why?
That is almost always caching. Regenerate files in Elementor → Tools and purge your caching plugin and CDN.
